Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera says 5,000 metric tons of cooked and uncooked food is wasted in the country on a daily basis.
Speaking at an event at the Ministry premises today, Minister Amaraweera said Sri Lanka is suffering a significant economic loss as a result of the situation.
The Environment Minister said they have a target of reducing food waste in the country by 50 per cent by the year 2030.
He said nearly 30 to 40 percent of the food produced through crops and meat products in the country are wasted, at present.
The Minister said the matter which is a global concern must be resolved promptly.
