Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage has revealed that plans are in place to import 5,000 dairy cattle by next year.
The Minister said the main objective of the government is to establish large scale dairy farms to popularise liquid milk.
Minister Aluthgamage speaking at a programme in Kandy said a need has arisen for large scale dairy farms to be created in the country that will help meet the demand.
The Minister said such projects have never been initiated in Sri Lanka.
He noted that five companies have been selected under the first phase to initiate the programme adding that the firms will be provided the relevant land areas.
Minister Aluthgamage added under the programme, dairy cattle will be imported. He said businessmen involved in the programme will invest large sums on the project.
The Agriculture Minister said Sri Lanka should be self-sufficient in milk adding that the government also intends on promoting the use of liquid milk.
