The 44 individuals arrested yesterday for engaging in a protest opposite the Presidential Secretariat have been released on bail.
The group was released on a personal bail of Rs.100,000 each.
The order was issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court this evening.
The ten vehicles seized by Police yesterday during the protest were also released.
A heated exchange broke out between Police and teacher principal trade union representatives who were present when the 44 individuals were escorted to Court.
22 male teachers, 16 female teachers and six other individuals were among the group arrested last evening.
The Medical Office of the Health of the Colombo Municipal Council carried out Rapid Antigen Tests on all 44 individuals yesterday, which returned negative.
Legal action was filed against the group under the National Highways Act on charges of obstruction, being part of an illegal gathering and obstructing traffic along a main road including the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance.
The protesters converged at the Presidential Secretariat in a vehicle procession seeking solutions to salary anomalies.
