Police have arrested a person involved in a racket of stealing motorcycles from various parts of the country, changing their number plates and selling them again.
According to information received by the Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division, the individual was arrested in Badalgama yesterday.
Police said the suspect had stolen motorcycles parked by roadsides in various areas, changed engine numbers and chassis numbers, affixed fake number plates and sold them to individuals.
Police have also taken into custody a motorcycle with fake number plates stolen from Lunuwila which was in the custody of the suspect at the time of his arrest.
Further investigations revealed that six more motorcycles which were being prepared for sale were found hidden in a garage in Dankotuwa.
The suspect is a 26-year-old resident of Badalgama, Godigamuwa.
The Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division is conducting further investigations.
