The draft of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution has been gazetted.
Proposals presented by Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to amend the Constitution have been publicised through the issuance of the Extraordinary Gazette notification, dated 29th of June.
The 22nd Constitutional Amendment received Cabinet approval on the 20th of June.
Accordingly, changes to the composition of the Constitutional Council, restricting dual citizenship holders from holding public office, new methodology to appoint Cabinet Ministers, among others have been proposed.
The draft will now be presented to Parliament.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe held a number of discussions to obtain views from various political parties to introduce the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Several corners have also requested to re-enact the 19th Constitutional Amendment to empower independent bodies.
