The draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution will be presented before the Cabinet of Ministers today for approval.
A special discussion has taken place pertaining to the draft amendment on Saturday between, the President, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Justice.
The draft was first presented to the Cabinet two weeks ago by Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
Accordingly, a decision was taken to deliberate the draft and obtain views and suggestions of all political parties.
At least two rounds of discussions were held between political party representatives and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during the past couple of weeks. Based on the outcome of discussions, the Justice Minister has amended the draft and the document will be presented to the Cabinet today.
Following the Cabinet approval, the draft Constitutional Amendment will be gazetted.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the Justice Minister is likely to present the draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution in Parliament this week.
