Court today postponed the pronouncement of the verdict of the 2012 Welikada prison riots case until the 12th of January.
The case has been filed against former Inspector of the Police Narcotics Bureau Neomal Rangajeewa and former Prison Superintendent Emil Ranjan Lamahewa over the death of eight inmates.
NewsRadio court correspondent said when the case was taken up this morning before a three-member Colombo High Court bench comprising Judges Gihan Kulatunga, Pradeep Hettiarachchi and Manjula Tilakaratne, it was announced that the verdict will be announced next week.
The Police Special Task Force launched a special operation on the 9th of November, 2012, to seize illegal and banned items in the possession of Welikada Prison inmates.
During the operation a number of prisoners died, resulting in a huge backlash from human rights activists and the general public.
The Attorney General filed a case against the two defendants alleging that eight prisoners were killed in clashes.
After concluding the submissions made by the defendant and the plaintiff in the case, last month, Court stated due to the complexity of the evidence presented during the trial, it would take time to study the matter extensively and pronounce its verdict.
