The All Island Private Bus Owners Federation says there is a risk of 20,000 bus conductors losing jobs with the introduction of prepaid bus cards.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Chief Secretary of the Federation Anjana Priyanjith said the new system must be studied at length prior to introducing it.
Priyanjith said they are making preparations to launch a series of protests against the implementation of the prepaid card system, if the process is implemented without such a study.
He said a private bus union has reached a decision to install equipment that allow private buses to operate without a conductor.
He said bus drivers must be taught how to use such equipment prior to introducing it adding a combined timetable must also be introduced for private buses.
He added a special lane must also be provided for such buses to operate.
