The Ministry of Justice says steps have been taken to release 173 prison inmates on Poson Poya which falls on Tuesday.
The release of inmates was recommended by Minister of Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa.
Those imprisoned due to the failure to pay fines will have all payables due after today, waived off under the state pardon.
The highest number of 23 inmates will be released from Welikada Prison.
