1,708 individuals arrested in relation to May 9 unrest

The Police, in its latest update revealed that a total of 1,708 individuals have been arrested thus far in relation to the May 9th unrest and violence across the island.

The Police, in its latest update revealed that a total of 1,708 individuals have been arrested thus far in relation to the May 9th unrest and violence across the island.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said 852 complaints have been lodged thus far over the incidents.

The SSP said 117 suspects were arrested yesterday, with 78 individuals released on bail and 32 others remanded.

He noted that 900 individuals have thus far been released on bail over the incidents on the 9th of May while 751 individuals have been placed in remand custody.

The Police Media Spokesman noted that the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Stations, and special investigation units are currently conducting investigations into the unrest.

He added that 25 suspects arrested by the CID have also been remanded.
