Sixteen Sri Lankan domestic workers who were held at the protection centre of the Sri Lankan embassy in Oman after being subjected to various forms of harassment while employed have returned to the island.
It was revealed that the women were taken to Dubai by employment agents under tourist visa and later taken to Oman by land.
The women reveal that they escaped from their place of employment in Oman due to sexual harassment, assault, burns and non-payment of wages by their employers and later sought the protection of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Oman.
The domestic workers were revealed to be residents of Ratnapura, Badulla, Kandy, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Batticaloa and Trincomalee.
It was reported that another 26 domestic workers who were also abused are still being held in protection centres in Oman and will be flown back to Sri Lanka by the end of the month via temporary passports.
