The State, Provincial and Government Federation of Trade Unions has decided to engage in a joint trade union action today together with all sector of the state service.
Chief Secretary Ajith K Thilekeratne speaking at a media briefing in Kandy said 1.5 million state workers will join today’s strike action.
Thilekeratne said they decided to engage in union action against the second in command in the country, violating the state of emergency and instigating violence.
He said they will disregard the state of emergency, amidst a setting where the government also disregarded the laws in place that led to widespread destruction including houses and vehicles being set on fire.
Ajith K Thilekeratne said trade unions condemn such actions and therefore launched an indefinite strike action from today.
