The ‘හරිත දැයක්’ national agricultural home garden programme will commence tomorrow.
Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage addressing media said the programme is focused on meeting the country’s need for food through public initiatives.
The Minister said the programme will get underway at in Kahathuduwa, Homagama tomorrow (29).
The Minister said similar ceremonies will be held in all 331 Divisional Secretariats across the island simultaneously.
He added 2.2 million people in all 14,022 Grama Niladhari divisions living in 20 perch land areas have been included in the programme.
The Minister said each family will receive four saplings and seeds along with the equipment necessary for home gardening.
The Minister said the 2.2 million participants will contribute towards 275,000 acres of home gardening.
He said these land areas will be included in the country’s production area.
Minister Aluthgamage said although there have been claims that a food shortage will arise in the country, after examining the area set apart for paddy and vegetable cultivation, he determined there is no proof to support such claims.
The Minister said the Samurdhi Department has 12,000 greenhouses to distribute saplings adding that the Ministry of Agriculture will be involved in the distribution of seeds.
