COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Political parties and independent group contesting the upcoming Local Authorities Election have agreed to a proposal to limit the funds spent on campaigning.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between the National Election Commission and representative of political parties and independent group contesting the upcoming election.
Accordingly, political parties have consented to spend no more than Rs. 15 per voter, and parties to spend up to 60 percent of the election expenditure of a candidate.
Although the government has passed the Regulation of Election Expenditure Bill in Parliament to prevent undue influence and excessive spending on campaigning activities, the provisions will not be applicable for the upcoming Local Authorities election.
Accordingly, the Election Commission and political party representatives have agreed to limit the election campaign spending voluntarily in the absence of a specific law.
