COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Assistant Leader of the United National Party former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has called on all political groups to work together and solve the pressing issues of the people.
Former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the people are not demanding elections but seeking relief to feed their families.
The UNP Assistant Leader stressed that elections should be held in a timely manner and noted that his party is also opposed to delaying elections.
He said President Ranil Wickremesinghe clearly stated in Parliament that he will not call for a snap general election since the country’s pressing issues must be addressed.
Former Minister Kariyawasam said therefore the opposition should not play politics at this juncture and assist in programmes that have been initiated to alleviate the problems of the people.
He said the opposition should also present their alternatives to support the government and the country in general.
Former Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam added that it is unfortunate that some factions are merely hurling allegations at those working to rebuild the country without taking steps to solve the issues of the people.
