The Opposition claims less than Rs. 60 billion will be required to vaccinate the entire Sri Lankan population.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Eran Wickremeratne said the government failed to take timely decisions regarding vaccination which led to the current crisis.
MP Wickremeratne said if the government had initiated the vaccination drive much earlier, the country could’ve averted the current crisis.
He claimed the present administration has appointed inefficient individuals to lead various bodies and is now coming up with excuses.
MP Eran Wickremeratne said the losses incurred by the SriLankan Airlines are approximately Rs. 260 billion and therefore noted that if decisions were taken in an appropriate time, the vaccination drive could’ve been completed.
He also urged the general public to get vaccinated since the Delta coronavirus variant is spreading rapidly in the country at present.
MP Eran Wickremeratne noted that if a majority of the adult population receives the vaccine, the situation will be at a manageable level.
He also said the government is blaming the opposition for staging protests and is attempting to create a public opinion that the current spread is due to the recent wave of demonstrations.
MP Wickremeratne said the government instead of blaming various factions must take appropriate decisions.
