Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has been served indictments on charges of misusing funds of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation during his term as Minister of Mass Media under the United People’s Freedom Alliance government.
The Minister, former SLRC Chairman Wimal Rubasinghe, and former SLRC Director General Chandrapala Liyanage were served indictments by the Colombo High Court today (22).
The group is accused of purchasing GI pipes through funds belonging to the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation for political activities thereby incurring losses to the government.
Colombo High Court judge Nawarathne Marasinghe upon delivering the indictments also instructed the Immigration and Emigration Controller to prevent the three individuals from leaving the country.
Subsequently, each individual was released on a Rs.20,000 cash bail each and a Rs.500,000 surety bail each while the accused were ordered to hand over their passports to court.
The judge meanwhile stated that in the event Minister Rambukwella seeks to travel overseas on official purposes, a request to temporarily lift the overseas travel ban will be considered.
The case will be taken up once again on the 1st of February.
