Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has proposed the appointment of a Parliamentary Committee for the procurement of fuel and coal.
Speaking in Parliament this morning, Energy Minister Wijesekera said the committee should be chaired by an opposition Member of Parliament.
The Minister said since President Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for the appointment of several new Parliamentary Committees, he is also proposing the appointment of a procurement committee.
Minister Wijesekera added that those in the opposition such as MP Patali Champika Ranawaka have indicated that fuel can be procured at lower rates and therefore he requested an Opposition MP to head the committee.
He said it will also prevent purported corruption from taking place. In response to the proposal, Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva said he is heading the Committee on Public Finance and his committee is already empowered to look into fuel and coal procurement.
