COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Parliamentarian Kabir Hashim is expected to be appointed to the Constitutional Council.
During this morning’s Parliamentary session, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said he is hoping to nominate MP Hashim to the Constitutional Council.
The 10-member Constitutional Council was established following the enactment of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
The Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to the independent commissions such as Police commission, Bribery commission and Election commission.
The Speaker holds the chairmanship of the Council while the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are ex-officio members of the 10-member Constitutional Council.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has named Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to the Constitutional Council as his nominee.
One member of the Constitutional Council has to be nominated by a majority of Government MPs, while the Opposition Leader’s party nominates another.
Accordingly, MP Premadasa today said he is hoping to name MP Hashim as his nominee.
Minority parties and opposition groups that do not belong to the Opposition Leader’s party can also nominate one MP to the Constitutional Council.
The other three CC members will be appointed from outside Parliament.
