The JVP says there is a risk of prices of many consumer goods increasing due to the series of agreements the Consumer Affairs Authority is preparing to sign with several companies.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti said although clauses were included in the relevant agreements preventing an increase in prices, such clauses were amended deeming them invalid in the event of a pandemic.
Former MP Handunnetti said the companies retain the right to increase prices through these clauses if the pandemic prolongs.
He said officials resigning are opposing these clauses.
The former Parliamentarian said the government must reveal who at the Consumer Affairs Authority decided on such agreements.
On a separate note, Handunnetti charged Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana of making various statements with the intention of concealing burning issues.
He said the Minister made various claims and most recently said Lanka Sathosa will sell garments.
Former MP Handunnetti said all issues concealed will resurface adding the present administration has severely burdened the public.
