The JVP has questioned how tenders of the Kerawalapitiya LNG Power Plant were vested with an American firm that was not part of the bidding process, even though competitive bids were called.
Speaking to media today, Leader of the JVP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said bids were called internationally and also via newspaper advertisements.
However, he said issuing the tender to the US company New Fortress is an underhand deal linked to Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa.
The MP also stressed that a contract to supply gas for the next five years has been issued to the same company.
MP Dissanayake claimed that these transactions were suspicious as the New Fortress company has also been granted exclusive rights to supply gas to other power generation plants constructed in the Kerawalapitiya area.
The MP added the Cabinet Paper pertaining to the decision was signed in secret last Friday night.
The JVP Leader noted the Cabinet Paper in particular was not sent to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval and was tabled on Friday as a supplementary paper.
