COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation says the Jaya Container Terminal at the Colombo Harbour will be able to handle 1 million more containers following the completion of the current expansion project.
The Jaya Container Terminal will be expanded to 1,380 metres in length. The expansion will allow two 360-metre-long vessels to dock at the same time.
The 1,260-metre long Jaya Container Terminal currnely handles around 2 million containers.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation, the Colombo Harbour will be a unique port in South Asia in the next five years following the completion of the Eastern Container Terminal and Jaya Container Terminal.
Meanwhile, during a visit to the Colombo Port, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva instructed officials to expedite the expansion project at the Jaya Container Terminal.
The expansion project is funded by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
