Concerns in the construction industry in the wake of the economic crisis have been discussed at the Sub Committee on Identifying the Short & Medium-Term Programmes related to Economic Stabilization of the National Council yesterday (11) under the patronage of MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.
Representatives of the public and private sectors related in the construction industry, participated in the discussion and opinions of the respective parties were obtained on issues in the field.
The group claimed that there are approximately 650,000 direct and 700,000 indirect jobs related to the construction industry.
They pointed out that the construction sector has collapsed at present.
Furthermore, the group said it has become difficult for the public to purchase apartments and offices that are currently being built.
They also claimed that a large number have difficulties in paying bank loans.
It was also revealed that due to the economic crisis, there has been a tendency for people associated with the construction industry to leave the country.
MP Ranawaka said the engineering sector will suffer a major collapse if solutions that require funds, solutions that do not require funds and legal solutions are not identified and implemented separately.
He said he hopes to submit to Parliament and the government proposals on the matter.
