Teachers’ unions say many issues have arisen due to the government’s decision to maintain COVID-treatment and quarantine centres at several teaching faculties across the country.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Chief Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said a large number of valuable items including books and clothes belonging to teachers and students at the faculties were destroyed by individuals receiving treatment.
Jayasinghe said approximately 8,000 students were studying at 19 such faculties.
He said while the government announced that schools will reopen on the 21st of October, despite being November a decision has not been issued yet pertaining to reopening the faculties.
He said pre-school students have been summoned while teachers and students of teacher faculties haven’t been recalled.
The Chief Secretary said a lot of equipment at the Pulathisipura National College of Education has been destroyed.
He said most items belong to students from low income families whose parents struggle to provide facilities.
Furthermore, Jayasinghe said the government must compensate students as hundreds of thousands worth valuables have been destroyed.
