COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Tests are to be conducted next week to identify the current variant of the coronavirus spreading in the country.

The head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said tests will be conducted since the number of COVID-19 cases reported in the country is increasing.

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara noted that there are claims that the COVID Omicron XBB strain has entered the country, and therefore tests will be help identify the exact strain currently spreading in Sri Lanka.
