Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Kushinagar Airport in Uttar Pradesh.
A Sri Lankan delegation, including a Holy Relic entourage, arrived in Kushinagar in the inaugural international flight from Colombo.
Kushinagar is one of the major pilgrimage centres for Buddhism followers from all over the world. Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana in Kushinagar.
It is one of the most important archaeological sites in India. The airport will benefit domestic as well as international pilgrims by providing seamless connectivity.
Anunayake thera of the Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Wedaruwe Upali thera, 100 Maha Sangha, Minister Namal Rajapaksa and several other Ministers were on-board the maiden flight that departed the Bandaranaike International Airport around 6am.
The Lankan group is due to return to Sri Lanka tomorrow evening.
The Kapilavastu sacred relics of the Waskaduwa Rajaguru Sri Subhuti Maha Viharaya were also flown to India.
The relics will be displayed in several Indian cities, including Kushinagar and Sarnath.
