Minister Bandula Gunawardana says internationally recognised universities must be established in Sri Lanka through an all-party consensus.
The Minister speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing today said students were at a significant disadvantage in 2020-2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic with universities and schools closing.
Minister Gunawardana said Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha and officials took several measures to ensure that students sitting examinations are not at a disadvantage owing to the failure to cover the syllabus.
He noted that as a former Education Minister an all-party consensus must be reached to pave the way for foreign universities to be established in Sri Lanka that will also open opportunities for students from countries such as India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Maldives to enrol in Sri Lanka.
Minister Gunawardana said such avenues will help generate foreign exchange while also preventing foreign exchange from leaving the country with students encouraged to complete higher studies locally.
