State Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama says inter-provincial bus services will resume from the 21st of October.
Speaking to media in Kandy today, State Minister Amunugama said the health sector has granted its approval in this regard.
The State Minister however said they were instructed to hold off on resuming railway services for two weeks.
He said they have managed to minimise congestion during office hours within provinces by using Sri Lanka Transport Board and private bus services.
He said the SLTB cannot deploy buses for inter-provincial transport without approval.
State Minister Amunugama said they are aware of the issues faced by the public in finding transport.
On a separate note, the State Minister said the SLTB hopes to commence a special bus service for school children when schools reopen.
He said schools cannot be reopened when inter-provincial travel restrictions are in effect.
He said in order to commence the new service, schools must operate at full capacity.
The State Minister said plans are being discussed on transporting students safely to and from homes.
He said they are unaware if health authorities will reopen schools altogether or according to different grades or change timetables adding the situation must be monitored.
