Parliamentarian Harin Fernando says the protest organised by the opposition will be staged as planned in Colombo tomorrow.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, MP Fernando said the President will complete two years in power tomorrow and they are hoping to highlight the issues faced by the public through the protest.
He said the government and Police are attempting to stifle their demonstration by obtaining court orders.
MP Harin Fernando said citizens are taking to the streets against the rise in prices of rice, milk power, cement, gas and other essential commodities and also against fertiliser issue and several other concerns.
He also requested Police not use force and follow the law when dealing with protesters.
Parliamentarian SM Marikkar claims the government is unwilling to listen to the concerns of the public. He said the public has not received any concessions through the 2022 Budget.
MP Marikkar said the government which kept the country open when more than 200 COVID-19 deaths occurred in a day is now concerned about demonstrations.
He said they will not bow to such oppressive moves and will continue to educate the public.
MP SM Marikkar said the government cannot silence them by hiding behind the coronavirus crisis.
Parliamentarians Rajitha Senaratne also accused the government of attempting to hide behind COVID-19 regulations to silence them.
He said Police have taken over the duties of Medical Officers of Health and Public Health Inspectors at present.
MP Rajitha Senaratne said letters have been directed to Police officers by Officers-In-Charge of stations to enforce the quarantine regulations which is a clear indication that the government is afraid of the protest planned by the opposition.
