India today reported less than 20,000 cases for the first time since March 11.

It recorded 18,795 cases this morning which is also a sharp drop from 26,041 infections reported yesterday.

The country also confirmed 179 deaths, again a big dip from the 276 deaths reported a day ago.

The daily positivity rate – number of positive cases identified per 100 – stands at 1.42 per cent, less than 3 per cent for the last 29 days.

India’s Health Ministry said Less than 50,000 daily cases are being reported in the country for 93 consecutive days now, which is a reflection on the vaccination progress.

Kerala, which continues to lead the states in daily Covid cases, saw a sharp drop with 11,699 cases in a day.

The state also reported 58 deaths.

Meanwhile India’s top medical body, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has said that even if the third wave surfaces in the country, its intensity will be low.
