The Sri Lanka Police was today awarded 125 jeeps under the first phase of providing 500 jeeps under Indian loan assistance.
An event was held today (22) at the Ministry of Public Security to hand over the 125 jeeps.
The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay symbolically handed over the jeeps to Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles.
Minister Alles said today is a special day for the Sri Lanka Police adding that the 500 new jeeps will provide a solution to the lack of duty vehicles at certain Police Stations.
The Minister said in order to meet public expectations, the jeeps will be an asset to the Sri Lanka Police to combat theft and narcotics adding that the Police has not been able to procure vehicles for the past three years.
Minister Alles noted that as a result of working closely with the Indian High Commissioner, the project was made possible and expressed his appreciation to the Indian government.
The Indian High Commissioner meanwhile said the Indian government is pleased to have contributed to assisting the Police in maintaining law and order, democracy and stability in Sri Lanka.
