Chasing a target of 196 runs, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 162 in 18.5 overs.
Ishan Jayaratne played a lone hand to steer Sri Lanka closer to the target as the rest of the batters faltered trying to increase the scoring rate.
Jayaratne was dismissed in the 19th over for 51. His 22-ball innings comprised of four fours and four sixes.
Mahela Udawatte and Jeevan Mendis hit 20s but the Indians prevailed in front of a boisterous crowd.
Vinay Kumar took three wickets for India. Earlier India captain Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and opted to bat.
An unbeaten knock of 108 runs off 71 balls by Naman Ojha helped India post 195 for six in 20 overs.
His innings also included 15 fours and two sixes.
Meanwhile, Nuwan Kulasekara was in good form for Sri Lanka and bagged three wickets in three overs.
