The opposition says there are reports that electricity tariffs will be increased fivefold in the future.
Speaking to media after calling on the Chief Prelate of Asgiriya and Malwathu Chapters in Kandy, Former Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra said the opposition will extend its support to the government, if it implements a stringent economic policy.
The former Parliamentarian said the present administration does not heed any advice and instead resorts to arbitrary decision-making.
She said the opposition has MPs with thorough knowledge of the economy.
Premachandra added that Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa is acting arbitrarily adding the Minister will next go to another nation to obtain a loan after spending the funds received from India.
The former MP said neither the President nor the Prime Minister has control over the Finance Minister’s actions.
She said an individual receiving a monthly salary of Rs.30,000 cannot sustain a family after paying electricity and water bills and other expenses.
On a separate note, former MP Premachandra said there are ulterior motives behind the stance taken by MPs Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila on Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
She is of the view MPs Weerawansa and Gammanpila and Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara are attempting to pave the way for another member of the Rajapaksa family to come into power.
Premachandra said considering the past actions of these individuals they are attempting to keep their public mandate intact and assist another individual who is also against the Finance Minister in the future.
