Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath says there is a risk of the COVID-19 Delta virus variant spreading rapidly in the country.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Dr. Herath said between 20%-30% of the random PCR tests carried out in the Colombo district were identified to be infected with the Delta virus variant.
He said majority of the reported COVID patients are showing symptoms while a majority require oxygen as well.
The Deputy Director General said the reserved spaces in a few hospitals have now been filled under these circumstances.
Dr. Herath said they believe individuals infected with the Delta variant could exist in these percentages outside of Colombo.
