A heated situation between several Ministers representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party was reported in Parliament today.
The situation arose when State Minister Roshan Ranasinghe said former President Maithripala Sirisena had made a false statement about him in Parliament yesterday.
State Minister Ranasinghe said he has never spread any gossips throughout his political career.
The State Minister said the President reached the decision on organic farming with the agreement of the Cabinet of Ministers including Ministers who represent the SLFP, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mahinda Amaraweera and State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna.
State Minister Ranasinghe said former President Sirisena engaged in reforming the SLFP based on organic farming.
The State Minister claimed the SLFP took advantage of the organic farming crisis and the controversy over the jogging track along the ‘Parakrama Samudraya’.
The State Minister said the former President attempted to use the situation faced by the farming community for political motives similar to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
He said the government will not be affected by one or two members crossing over.
Responding to State Minister Ranasinghe, State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said opinions and recommendations were already presented on this matter and questioned the benefit of continuing this conversation.
He said if this continues, they will have to respond as a party.
State Minister Ranasinghe questioned the professionalism behind former President Sirisena’s comments when he was not in the House.
Joining the debate, Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri urged the Speaker of the House to prevent the use of the Parliament to discuss internal party issues.
MP Wijesiri said matters not included in the agenda are being discussed.
Meanwhile, the leader of the National Peoples Power, Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the country’s situation becomes obvious if the opposition sits back and observes the conflicts within the government.
MP Dissanayake said everyone will agree that the situation will only worsen if arguments continue.
The Parliamentarian said they would be pleased to see the matter deteriorate further as more secrets will be revealed.
He said the only solution is for Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, former President Maithripala Sirisena, State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara to reach a common ground and end the conflict.
