Health authorities say they expect to reduce coronavirus case numbers and control the pandemic situation in the country, through the 10 day quarantine curfew.
Speaking to media, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena said health workers are working day and night to ensure patient care.
He said the public failed to adhere to travel restrictions imposed island wide, thereby prompting the government to declare island wide curfew for ten days.
Dr. Gunawardena claimed that curfew will ensure that people stay within their residences, thus secluding the spread of the virus to individuals within that residence only.
Dr. Asela Gunawardena claimed it would take a while for results of the lockdown to show, adding it was the best course of action since the health sector is stretched beyond its capacity.
Dr. Gunawardena stressed a lockdown was imposed despite its economic impact to the country, in order to save human resources within the health sector from being overworked.
