Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian SB Dissanayake says a large number of harmful alcohol distilleries are being set up in rural areas due to the closure of liquor stores.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Dissanayake said security forces are unable to conduct raids into illegal breweries due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
When questioned by journalists over the individual responsible for the directive to reopen liquor stores, MP Dissanayake said he is unable to respond to the matter.
He claimed even though there were no individuals manufacturing illicit liquor in his electorate, due to the closure of liquor stores individuals have restored to distilling alcohol.
MP Dissanayake said decisions that can be taken, must be resorted to keeping in mind that the country is not functioning as normal due to the pandemic.
On a separate note, the Parliamentarian said certain Ministers and MPs of the SLPP criticising each other at media briefings is unsuitable.
He said any issues persist, they must resolve them through the intervention of the Prime Minister or the President.
