The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has condemned certain statements by the government claiming self-imposed shop closures in major cities by the public was politically influenced.

Speaking during a media briefing this morning, Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman said such statements by government officials at a time when the coronavirus has claimed the lives of thousands and tens of thousands having contracted the virus, indicate that the government values personal gain over human lives.

MP Rahuman said citizens and trade associations have come forward with self-imposed isolation adding this shows the public’s realisation that the government is moving in the wrong direction.

The Parliamentarian said members of the government have no clear understanding of the critical COVID-19 situation.

MP Rahuman said the government’s current policy is aimed at building flyovers, developing 200 cities and selling power plants to foreign firms instead of mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic.
