Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake says the government should provide an alternative or grant concessions to the general public at a time the electricity tariff has been increased by a large percentage.
MP Attanayake said the low income earners cannot cope with continuous price hikes. He said the electricity tariff hike announced yesterday is another hit on the people.
MP Tissa Attanayake noted that the Ceylon Electricity Board has claimed that it is incurring large losses due to the increase in production and operation costs.
He said however the prices should be increased by an amount which can be handled by the people.
The Parliamentarian noted that the government should introduce a scheme to provide relief to the people who cannot afford to pay high electricity bills.
He said the public is already suffering due to the current economic climate. Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said therefore they propose to the government to provide some concessions at the earliest instead of increase water and electricity tariff.
