COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The government has decided to maintain a reserve of 8,000MT of rice in the year 2023.
The Ministry of Trade said a sum of Rs. 100 million has been allocated in the Budget to maintain a reserve of 8,000 metric tons of rice in the year 2023.
The Ministry has taken steps to maintain the reserve considering the difficulties faced this year.
The Ministry was compelled to import stocks of rice due to the shortfall in harvest owing to the fertiliser ban.
The economic crisis also restricted the market and the public was warned of a purported rice shortage in the latter part of this year.
However, the Ministry had taken steps to prevent a rice shortage in the country.
The Ministry of Trade has announced that the buffer stocks will be maintained with funds allocated through the Budget to tackle any shortages next year.
