The Ministry of Environment has decided to introduce a programme to distribute saplings of fruit bearing trees and other trees, free of charge to the public.

Subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said since farmers and others involved in the industry are facing difficulties due to the coronavirus crisis, they will purchase saplings from them and re-distribute it among the public.

Minister Amaraweera said they have allocated Rs.10 million for the programme.

He said this will encourage tree planting which will also help increase the forest density of the country.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said they are hoping to mainly distribute saplings of trees with timber value and saplings of fruit bearing trees which are beneficial for the individuals involved as well as the country.
