The opposition accuses the government of burdening the public by imposing taxes on frequently used goods.
Speaking to media in Colombo, Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala said the tax policy of the present government has severely burdened the people who are suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said taxes have been imposed on goods such as sprats and dried fish that are consumed daily by average Sri Lankans.
MP Alawathuwala noted citizens who have been struggling to afford three meals a day, will now face difficulties in preparing a single meal.
He said the government is providing tax relief to powerful associates while imposing levies on goods that are consumed by the poor.
Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala also noted that LP gas prices have been increased by more than Rs.300 adding queues to purchase domestic gas cylinders have also become longer due to the shortage.
