Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says the government is suppressing the freedom of protestors and going against the rights of citizens who live within a democratic country.
The MP visited the Thalangama Police to inquire into the wellbeing of five students who were arrested over protests.
MP Premadasa speaking to media said the arrests are the first step towards suppressing student activists fighting for the right to free education.
The Opposition Leader noted the Samagi Jana Balawegaya together with student activists are engaged in a protest to secure their rights of free education, ensured by the Constitution.
He claimed the government is threatening democracy by suppressing the voice of citizens.
However the Opposition Leader stressed he will continue to support the education sector in their struggle.
