State Minister Shehan Semasinghe says the government’s objective is to uplift the economic status of low-income individuals.
State Minister Semasinghe said a programme to build 1,000 houses for low-income families will be implemented through the Department of Samurdhi Development.
Speaking to media during the ‘Saubhagya’ Production Village Programme in Colombo, the State Minister said the programme is being implemented with aim of establishing 500 production villages for 40,000 families across the country.
It was revealed that the government spends Rs.50 billion annually on the Samurdhi benefit.
State Minister Semasinghe said the COVID-pandemic must not be used as a reason to avoid public welfare programmes.
