Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says after he made a revelation pertaining to a price discrepancy, the government has saved nearly Rs.2 billion through the importation of nano nitrogen urea fertilizer from India.
MP Ranawaka said the government is now purchasing a litre of fertilizer for US$ 5 less than the price quoted before.
Speaking to media in Colombo, MP Ranawaka said he was responding to a challenge made by the company that imports fertilizer to the country.
The Parliamentarian said he revealed on the 3rd of November that the government is committing a massive fraud through the fertilizer imports.
He said the government was purchasing a litre of fertilizer for US$ 25 whereas it is sold in the market for only $6.
MP Ranawaka said following the revelation, Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has presented a Cabinet paper to rectify the errors and procurement process during the purchase of nano nitrogen urea fertilizer from India.
He said Minister Aluthgamage also challenged that he will give Rs.100 million, if anyone is able to import nano nitrogen urea fertilizer for a lesser amount than the rate the government is paying.
MP Ranawaka said the government is now paying US$ 5 less than the initial price but noted that the price could be reduced further.
Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka therefore urged the government to save valuable reserves of the country by paying the appropriate rates without committing financial fraud.
