Expenditure Heads of Ministries of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs and Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government were passed with amendments in Parliament today.

Day two of the committee stage debate of the 2022 Budget commenced in Parliament at 10am.

Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara says they had failed to fulfil the promises they made at previous elections since the government was dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, during the past two years.

Minister Nanayakkara said although several factions have pointed out that the government has not fulfilled certain promises, it should be understood that no administration would’ve been able to deal with a pandemic and provide massive concessions.

The Minister said the public should appreciate the government for taking measures to control the spread of the novel coronavirus successfully.

He said while dealing with the pandemic, the present administration has also managed to provide answers to the salary anomalies of teachers and principals.

Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara noted that following the appointment of the salary commission other issues including salaries of pensioners will be resolved.

He, therefore, requested the public to remain patient.

Parliamentarian Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon said the government will fulfil its promises made during the election period.

MP Tennakoon said the current opposition leader and his faction have been opposing all moves of the government.

He requested them to be mindful that the government is working towards providing relief to the public while dealing with a pandemic.

MP Tennakoon assured that the government will not disregard the pensioners and the state sector workers in general.

He also noted that the Agrahara insurance scheme should be continued for the benefit of the pensioners.
