The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has questioned the government as to who will be responsible for the loss incurred by the public when companies are granted permission to increase prices of essential goods daily.
Speaking during a media briefing Parliamentarian SM Marikkar said the government has pushed the country towards a situation where people must stand in queues to purchase essential goods such as milk powder and gas.
MP Marikkar said no one thought such a situation will arise, in which the economy has collapsed and all sectors of society are burdened.
The MP noted 1kg of sugar is Rs.170 while a kilogram of dhal is around Rs.200 and the price of canned fish has exceeded Rs.300. He added all essential items are over Rs.100 at present.
MP Marikkar claimed certain private companies are also increasing the prices of essential items daily, without any price controls.
He stressed the government must control such actions, adding there is no need for a government if such measures can’t be controlled.
The MP also questioned who was responsible for taxes being removed and prices being increased, and urged patriots within the government to reveal such matters to the public.
