State Minister Duminda Dissanayake says the government must provide compensation to farmers who were faced with injustice as a result of decisions reached by the government regarding the fertiliser crisis.

Speaking to media at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party headquarters today, State Minister Dissanayake said the government promised to provide farmers with compensation if they are faced with injustice, at the time the decision was reached to continue agriculture using only organic fertiliser.

He noted the policy of the government is to use organic fertiliser, adding the government does not promote chemical fertiliser.

The State Minister added farmers have the option of using chemical fertiliser from the next harvesting season.

State Minister Dissanayake claimed there are suspicions over whether the private sector can import chemical fertiliser in time for the upcoming season, adding discussions will be held in this regard between the private sector and the Ministry of Agriculture.

He stated however the government will have to take responsibility if farmers have been faced with injustice, as a result of the decisions reached regarding the fertiliser crisis.

Meanwhile when inquired by media pertaining to the manner in which the government issues Gazettes, State Minister Dissanayake said no faction approves of Gazettes being reversed within a day of being issued.

He added those who issue the relevant Gazettes also accept that it is wrong.
