The Academy of Health Professionals says the government has imposed a political lockdown instead of imposing a scientific lockdown they demanded.

The union claims statements by certain members of the government have made it clear that the government has not imposed a lockdown but a wave of lockdowns.

Speaking during a media briefing this morning, the Chairman of the Academy of Health Professionals, Ravi Kumudesh said the quarantine curfew is similar to travel restrictions imposed previously.

Kumudesh named the quarantine curfew a “surprise lockdown” adding that the President’s process followed in imposing a lockdown is against virology.

He said the government kept the public in suspense on whether a lockdown will be imposed which resulted in the public panicking to gather supplies when it was announced.

The Chairman said members of the government who opposed the lockdown may claim a lockdown resulted in the spike in coronavirus infections adding that certain Cabinet of Ministers are prone to make false claims.

Meanwhile, Kumudesh said there are no signs of a quarantine curfew even though the country is three days into the lockdown.

He said everyone is engaged in their own tasks.

Kumudesh said the essential factor in converting the lockdown is segregating patients and infected individuals by testing.

The Chairman said they are ready to extend support and carry out responsibilities adding they will conduct 100,000 COVID-tests daily.

He said this lockdown does not fulfil what they hoped.
