Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dullas Alahapperuma says the proposal by Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana that a five percent tax must be charged from persons who receive an income of over Rs.100,000, is not the stance of the government.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet decisions media briefing at the Department of Government Information Minister Alahapperuma said the proposal was not discussed during the Cabinet meeting.
When questioned by media regarding Minister Gunawardana’s proposal to charge the tax in order to continue public services such as education and health, Minister Alahapperuma stated it was the Minister’s personal opinion adding that the government will not bring him to disrepute over the matter.
Meanwhile, commenting on allegations levelled against the government regarding shortages of essential goods from various areas, Minister Alahapperuma said the situation will return to normalcy from the 21st of September.
He added the current situation is understandable at a time several business organizations are inactive and the country is placed under a partial lockdown.
The Minister claimed the public would’ve had to face more serious concerns financially, if the country was placed under complete lockdown for an extended period.
